Caitlin Isobe was inspired to become more involved in Yolo County CASA after learning about the organization through her sorority,Kappa Alpha Theta. “My sorority supports Yolo County CASA philanthropically and I didn’t want to stop there. I felt connected to the cause and wanted to contribute in other ways.”
While Caitlin certainly had a busy life as a college student, she found time to commit to the CASA training. “Where there is a will, there is a way. I was so happy when I applied and was accepted into the program.”
After her CASA training, Caitlin understood much more about foster care and how it affects a child’s life. A key message that stood out to her was how much a consistent relationship could contribute to the well-being of a child. “I was excited to get to know my CASA child well and provide a consistent, supportive relationship that would allow me to properly advocate for her needs.”
Caitlin has been a CASA for nearly eighteen months. As a student, she doesn’t have a lot of money but has found creative ways to do special things for her CASA child. “I applied for and won Arianna Grande tickets for my CASA child and her foster mom a while back. She still talks about that being one of the best nights of her life. It was so rewarding to be able to do that for her.”
In addition to the Arianna Grande tickets, Caitlin has been able to provide other special experiences to her CASA child through special donations and programs. She always stresses thanking the people who help. “One time we wrote thank you notes during our visit because I wanted my CASA child to be aware of all the good things people do to help. At our next visit, my CASA child gave me a thank you note. It was such a sweet moment. It really showed me that she valued our time together.”
The advocacy part of being a CASA is also important to Caitlin. “Sometimes my CASA child is in a tough placement and I advocate for changes there. Sometimes I advocate for things as small as her needing a haircut. There are so many needs and it is an honor to be a voice in court for my CASA child. I’ve been to court many times on her behalf and I am grateful that I can help in that way.”
Caitlin is getting ready to graduate from UC Davis but still plans to visit her CASA child. Even though I’ve moved, I will continue to make the effort to see her after I finish college… even if it means driving a few more miles.”
Thank you, Caitlin, for everything you’ve done for children in need.
