Yolo County CASA Board Member Mary Patricia Whelan-Miille knows all too well the adversity that foster children face through her over 30 years working as an educational psychologist. One experience really stands out to her. “I began working with a teenage boy who had been in foster care for many years. You could see through his grades and attendance that his life was really thrown off course in the years immediately preceding and following his entry into foster care. During one of our sessions, I showed him copies of his early school photos, none of which he had ever seen. When I gave them to him, he just cried. He had no idea what he even looked like when he was little.”

Peter Pascoe arrived in Yolo County when he became a professor of veterinary anesthesiology at UC Davis. Around the same time, Yolo County CASA was just forming, and Peter’s late wife, Roz Pascoe, became one of the first Yolo County CASA volunteers. “She was part of the second CASA training in Yolo County.”

Suzanne Ramalia recently moved back to Yolo County and found her volunteer calling when she was driving home from her job at the Yolo County Sheriff’s office. “I was listening to NPR and someone from the national CASA organization was being interviewed. I thought it was a wonderful idea and I called the Yolo County chapter to become more involved. They were in the middle of a training cycle so I couldn’t attend that one, but I applied to and was accepted to the next one.”
